    The most quoted standard in online dating discourse is the "six-figure 6-footer": a man at least six feet tall earning at least $100,000. It sounds like a reasonable bar for a successful adult. The data says otherwise: each trait alone is uncommon, and their combination is rare.

    CDC NHANES anthropometric reference data puts the share of US adult men at 6'0" or taller at 14.5%. Census individual-income tables put the share of men aged 25-34 earning $100,000 or more at 12%, rising to 20% at ages 35-44. Multiplying the two - the same logic every delusion calculator uses - leaves roughly 1.7% of men aged 25-34, before any other criterion is applied.

    Height: the least movable filter

    Adult male height in the US is approximately normally distributed with a mean around 5'9" and a standard deviation near three inches. That puts 6'0" about one standard deviation above the mean - uncommon, but not exotic - and makes every inch above it exponentially rarer. Only 4% of men reach 6'2", and roughly 1% reach 6'4".

    Height is also the one criterion nobody can change, which makes it uniquely punishing as a filter. A 5'10" minimum passes about a third of men; a 6'0" minimum passes one in seven; a 6'2" minimum passes one in twenty-five.

    Census PINC data covering all men, working or not, shows how age-dependent high income is. At ages 18-24, effectively no one crosses $100,000: 1.5%. At 25-34 the share is 12%, and at 35-44 it reaches 20%. Even a $50,000 floor - roughly the median individual income - passes only 42% of men aged 25-34.

    The age gradient means the same income standard implies very different pools depending on the age range attached to it. A $100,000 filter on men aged 25-34 is four times stricter than the identical filter on men aged 35-44 relative to bracket size, and a $200,000 filter passes just 2% even in the older bracket.

    The multiplication: from reasonable to rare in three steps

    Start with men aged 25-34. Apply 6'0"+ (14.5%) and $100,000+ (12%): roughly 1.7% survive under independence - about 1 in 57. In reality height and income correlate only weakly, so the true figure sits near the independence estimate; published research on the height premium suggests a modest positive association that would nudge the share slightly upward, not rescue it.

    Now add ordinary-sounding criteria. Not obese (60% of men) brings the share near 1%. Never married (58% at 25-34) takes it to roughly 0.6% - about 1 in 170 men of that age, before politics, education, or anything unmeasurable. The 'reasonable' checklist describes roughly 120,000 men aged 25-34 nationwide, most of whom are already partnered.

    Both directions of the delusion

    The viral discourse frames delusion as a gendered accusation, but the arithmetic is symmetric.
